We are a breeder of the Coton de Tulear.  If you have any questions about the breed or litter availability, please feel free to e-mail me or call.  I hope you enjoy my site and you have made a wonderful choice in the Coton.  They are the sweetest, small dogs you will encounter.  Good luck in your search and hope you find what you are looking for.

Breeder Profile:
Cotons of Lake Jem has been raising Cotons since 1997.  We acquired our first two from Canada , then more from France & Belgium .  Our lines are extremely varied.  Although fixed, we still have our first two babies we acquired.  They are all family/children socialized.  We do not have kennels.  They are raised in our home as part of the family.  We mostly sell to companion homes but have let a few go to show/breedable ones.  Our offspring have done very well in the show ring - many have become champions.

We fell into the breed by luck and they have blessed our lives every day.  We are not a large breeder-presently 3 breeding females and 3 breeding males (different lines).

All our puppies are seen by the vet at 1 day old, then again at 7wks for their first set of shots.  All of our babies come with a 1 year Health Guarantee that is spelled out in our contract.

These are our babies and want them to be in a happy home, so we will offer to take any back. We breed for health & temperament foremost.

Breed Information:
The Coton de Tulear originates from Madagascar .  It is the world’s fourth largest island, just southeast of Africa .  Their name is derived from the texture of their coat (soft and cottony) and the location of their origin.  Tulear is a port city on the southwestern coast of Madagascar

Historically, the Coton’s arrival to Madagascar dates back approximately to the 15th Century.  Legend tales that ships sailing in the waters off the coast of Madagascar encountered storms. One such storm resulted in a shipwreck.  There was no survivor’s other than the reported small white dogs that swam

Coton's Of Jem

It is assumed that they are the ancestors of the Bichon family and possibly other local terriers.  The Coton de Tulear resulted from this wonderful cross.  The breed has only been recognized since 1971.  According to the Federation Cynologique Internationale (the european version of AKC) the breed standard is as follows:

Height - at withers approximately 9.8in. to 12.5in.
Weight- 8.8lbs. to 13.2lbs.

Height - at withers approximately 8.5in. to 11in.
Weight – 7.7lbs. to 11lbs.

These standards can vary if dog is sold as a companion.  The weight is proportional to the height.  They accept three colors to be shown: white, champagne & white, and tri-colored (white, champagne & black).  Although not accepted in the show ring, there is a more rare black & white.  Cotons have a fading gene that allows them to get lighter in coloring as they get older.  A very dark tri-colored puppy can turn out very light in color when it reaches maturity.  The more ginger the champagne coloring is, the more likely it will keep some of the coloring.

The coat is soft, cottony & never coarse or oily.  Gently brushing 2-3 times a week will help alleviate the mats.  During the period of 7 to 14 months the adult coat is coming in, this will require more attention.  It will have the tendency to mat.

They have dark brown eyes that are rimmed with black.  The nose and lips are all black.  The ears are dropped, thin, triangular and covered with long hair.  The ratio of the height at the withers to the length is 2:3.  The Coton has a slightly curved top line which in part differentiates him from other members of the Bichon family.

The Coton is a wonderful companion, often acting like a clown.  They have a personality of a large dog but in a small frame.  They are intelligent and forms very strong bonds with his/her masters.
